Mind body medicine
In certain types of Kinesiology, we often work on accessing the emotional aspect of the issue that we are working with. Even if that issue is for example a pain or injury in the neck, we look at what underlying emotions may be attributing to that pain, or causing in balances in the body that are interfering with the body’s ability to heal that pain / injury.
How do emotions impact our health?
Every emotion that we feel is instantly transmitted throughout our system by molecules called peptides. These affect the working of every single cell in the body instantly. What this means, is that the body continuously affected by the emotions that we are feeling. Even our immune cells have receptors for these peptides. So our emotions affect our ability to fight off disease and to heal. Long term, emotional stress can result in illness, dis-ease or pain in the body. We need to unlock the emotional aspect of the dis-ease so that the body can heal itself.
Why is the mind and emotion so important in health and healing
Even conventional medical doctors and scientists are seeing how people make themselves sick.
Most people do it quite unconsciously (they don’t even know that they are doing it) so when they get sick, they don’t know what has hit them.
We know that there are links between emotions and the body, between thought and physiology. Moods and emotions are inseparable from physiological responses in the autonomic nervous system. The dilating blood vessels that make us blush or the flush that comes with anger or the pounding of the heart that signifies passion or terror, show this link clearly. It is through this link that people make themselves ill through their repetitive thought patterns, their past experiences, their current emotional state and needs. When you hear people talking about negative emotions causing illness, what they really mean is not that the emotion of anger, fear or frustration make you ill in and of themselves, rather, it is the inability to simply feel the emotion, release the need to feel it and move on creates problems in your health. Simplistically, when you are faced with times when you cannot express your emotions, or feel them fully, you end up “pack them away” into your body.
This interferes with your bodies ability to maintain it’s perfect health. Areas of weakness result from emotions that are packed away or go unrecognized. In those areas of weakness you are more likely to get an injury or to experience pain, or disease. This is why we always explore the emotional content that may be lingering behind illness or pain.
Here are some interesting examples about the power of the mind on the body:
- In multiple personality patients, one personality may be totally normal (physically), and yet with the sudden shift of personalities, some as quick as the snap of a finger, the second personality may be hypoglycemic. Blood chemistry changing in seconds. There are many records of multiple personality patients changing everything from eye colour, to having a menstrual cycle per month for every personality, to being allergic one moment to a substance, and not affected the next. This phenomenon shows clearly the link between mind and body, and how easily and effectively the one can influence the other.
- In visualization experiments, women were able to increase the size of their breasts by up to 2.1 inches.
- Almost every single atom in your body is replaced within one year,
- Your intestine sloughs off and is replaced every single day,
- Even more impressive, you can cut away up to 80% of your liver – the remaining portion will restore the lost substance within a matter of months.
What does this mean in terms of healing?
If you can change the instructions to these cells as to how they should re-grow, you can change your body. Not just your breast size – although it is a fascinating idea, but more importantly, replace cancer cells with healthy ones, repair damaged tissue, free yourself from arthritis, get rid of pain, strengthen your immune system against disease and viruses – whatever your hearts desire! And the most amazing part – it doesn’t have to take that long – if your eyes are able to regenerate in 6 weeks – 6 weeks is enough to fix them in!
We know that we are able to create problems and areas of pain or disease in any part of our body at any time – if a multiple personality patient can develop and remove and allergy within seconds, so can you!
- What part of our own pain and illness are we subconsciously creating for ourselves?
- To what degree are we limiting our ability to heal to the degree and with the speed our body is capable of?
- Are we creating own illness with the way we think, the way we talk, and with the way we feel about ourselves?
- How can we rebuild the body as we would like it to be instead of in the habit of our old wounds?
- How can we instruct our bodies to heal faster?
- How can we establish what past events and relationships are making us ill, and how can we heal from them.
Without a doubt, the mind is connected to health. The body is specifically designed to heal itself. From a tiny cut on the finger, where we fight off infection, protect the wound with a scab, remove dead cell debris from the area, and grow new flesh, to the infestation of a cold virus where our immune cells find, identify, and destroy the virus, our body has an intelligence healing itself all the time. That intelligence is linked to the mind, and can be revved up or shut down by the mind.
YOUR BODY IS TALKING TO YOU – ARE YOU LISTENING?
When we are under stress, mentally, emotionally or physically, our body talks to us through symptoms or dis-ease. This is the messenger that our body uses to focus our attention to the fact that we are not living fully. Disease or dis-ease results from blocking the flow of life and symptoms are the body’s way of dealing with the blockage. Treating the symptoms is like killing the messenger for bringing bad news. By treating symptoms we are stopping the body from expressing that we are unable to adapt. Your body is literally talking to you. So the symptom is not the problem it is merely the messenger. Therefore it is important to find out what the message is and what area of your life it is telling you about!
For example, have you ever loved and lost? While the relationship was going well, you had abundant energy, could stay up late, eat junk food and yet felt on top of the world. Then, when the relationship fell apart, you suddenly felt unworthy / depressed /hopeless / angry… and you got physically ill – perhaps in the form of back pain or neck pain. What was the real cause of the pain? Something you did physically “wrong”? Or was it perhaps an outer manifestation of your internal state that affected your physical body?
In the above example, if we just worked on the muscles of the neck and back, we may be missing the real cause, i.e. the person’s inability to adapt to the new circumstances in the relationship. In other words it is important to see the pain, “disease” or negative patterns as a messenger.
A Kinesiologist works with the message behind the symptoms!
Deb Shapiro Author or Your body speaks your mind sums up the matter eloquently, she writes
” I want to make something very clear. Illness is real. Accidents happen, Medicine can help. I an not writing this book to convince you that the role reason for your illness is in your mind and that you must have done something wrong or are to blame for being ill. And I am not saying that simply by understanding how the mind and body work together you will be able to miraculously cure yourself of whatever ails you. What I am saying is that the role of the mind and emotions in your state of health is a vital one. By understanding this relationship, you can understand yourself more deeply and can claim a greater role in your own well being. There is an intimate and dynamic relationship between what is going on in your life, with your feelings and thoughts, and what happens in your body. Recently a Times magazine special showed that happiness, hopefulness, optimism and contentment “appear to reduce the risk or limit the severity of cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension, colds and upper respiratory infections. At the same time depression – the extreme opposite of happiness can worsen heart disease, diabetes and a host of other illnesses. If we separate an organism into its component parts, it cannot function. Recently my car broke down. When we went to pick it up after it was fixed, we were told it was just one small wire that had caused the problem, yet the engine could not function properly without it. in the same way , if you ignore the role your feelings and thoughts play, you are ignoring one of the most important parts that make up your whole being. And it may be the part that needs to get fixed”
